How low can they go?

Yeah, that’d be someone getting to level 10 in under 5 minutes through opening Hobbit Presents (with xp boosters.)  The xp scales with level as well. “Oh, it’s a bug”, the staunch Turbine defenders immediately exclaim as this being WAI would be a blow to them, yet DDO’s daily dice has given XP for some time now.  But a blue name came in and pronounced it WAI.  Lotro seems to be going the way of GW2, giving you XP any time you even glance at something, which is fine, I guess… except that downleveling exists in the later and not the former.  But wait!  There’s a handy XP disabler called Stone of the Tortoise, for only 495 TP per character in the store!!

Assassin’s Creed in Middle Earth

So this came out the other day, game play of the Shadow of Mordor game:

If you’ve played AC2, there were some definite “Huh, that looks way familiar” moments.  And you’d not be alone.  Randall does go on to tweet that he wasn’t accusing anyone of theft, would like to know if the code got licensed out and that the game looks awesome.

I can’t agree with the later. 😛  After seeing that trailer, my thought was that it looks like it could be a really fun game… if they entirely scraped the Middle Earth setting and storyline.  Instead come up with an original story.  Right now it looks like a blatant cash grab using the popularity of Tolkien’s work (which really, really bothers me as it’s so against the spirit of Tolkien’s work).  It seems there’s excitement out there from “regular” gamers, but any who also tend to love LotR haven’t had many positive comments nor plan to play it.

Achievements, Part One

A guildie started a thread called “Show off your MS paint skills” which is a spin off of a thread called ‘WvW in MS Paint’ on our server’s unofficial forums.  He thought it would be funny to see what guildies could come up.

My submission, a commentary on the effect of the WvW Season 1 achievements on the state of WvW. 😛 (click for full size)

I wanted to do more, but I’m so used to any artistic endeavours being undertaken in Photoshop.  I ❤ layers!  They make everything easier.

I have two more ideas I want to draw.   Perhaps I’ll be a bit cheaty with Photoshop.  Or just try a bit harder with paint.  Ally Brosh can come up with some epic stuff with paint  at Hyperbole and a Half (I highly recommend reading through her blog… it’s brilliant), so it’s worth a try. 😛

Oh dear….

One of the results of the new class revamps.. one seriously, OP LM:

Apparently part of this bug has existed since RoI(!!!) but has become even stronger in combination with a new LM trait.

gg Turbine devs! gg!

Unfortunate clipping

Danania snuck in a picture of some rather unfortunate clipping in Lotro in her latest entry and it reminded me of some shots I captured in Dragon Age 2.  One of my poor party members seemed to have issues with her shield…

You’re doing it wrong Aveline!  A shield is supposed to protect you, not hurt you. 😛

And geez, I’d forgotten how gory DA could be.. and I even had persistent gore turned off! Nothing worse than watching a cut scene with your character splattered with blood. *ick* Still it’s not as bad as what I’ve been seeing in Assassin’s Creed: Revelations as Spaix has been playing that. 😛

Why u no give for free!?

So hurray, Turbine has benevolently listened to the wishes of their players!  Hurray again, right?  Some players have wanted an XP disabler and it looks like they may get their wish come RoR.  But there’s a catch.  Here’s a description from the Bullroarer store:

Feel like you’re leveling too fast, and want to slow your character’s progression down? When used, this item disables experience earning from monster kills and quest completions. The item remains in your inventory, and can be used again to dispel the disabler effect, allowing you to earn experience again. The item can be continually used to disable and re-enable experience until the item expires. This inventory item lasts seven days.”

It seems we’re definitely to the point that anything that will improve quality will be monetised by Turbine.   The 6th bag is coming! …but you need to order the legendary RoR edition or pay TP later.  We’ve improved the barter wallet to be what it should have been to begin with! …that will be 995TP please.  You can use your skirmish soldiers on the landscape! …cough up some TP again.  We’re improving the relic system to where you can easily obtain the best relics, so much to the point you can just throw away the ones you currently have when you’re deconning, though lolz, we’re not really gonna do that as it’s gonna take you weeks and weeks to grind out the shards sooo… here’s a super duper Relic Removal scroll in the store for your convenience for some more TP plz!  New Harvest Festival with fun games where you must quickly gather eggs or mushrooms and these games will be tied to deeds! …oh you think those games are fun?  Yep, you know the drill.  Moar TP if you want to play moar!

There’s more coming too.  You know how we have 6 LI slots?  You know how we’re getting legendary bridles for our war steeds?  Those bridles go into your existing LI slots.  So Turbine has added an additional LI but they ain’t giving you additonal slots to make up for this.  I believe there are different types of bridles depending on the sort of war steed you’d like to use which would mean multiple bridles (I could be wrong though!).  Now most classes already need multiple LIs and have at least 4 slots taken up with the remaining two used for leveling other LIs for legacies, etc.  People will be forced to buy additional slots if they want to make use of these bridles.  There’s a thread in the beta forums complaining about this.  One can hope Turbine will do the right thing but after all the other jerky, greedy moves, I won’t be surprised if they don’t.

It’s frustrating to have junk like this reducing my love of the game.  I just wish the store would be used for convenience like they said it was going to be.   I wish Turbine had the attitude that Colin Johanson over with GW2 expressed:

We do appreciate that you’d like to buy lots of new content, but we’d prefer to give a lot of it to you for free, cause that’s what we think a responsible MMO company does!

*sigh* [/rant]

The LI Grind

I was skimming through the official forums and read a thread suggesting how we can prepare for the Rohan endgame.  Most of it was pretty much what I expected but I was fairly taken back when I read this bit about the new relics:

  • T9 Relics cost 1566 shards each (9,696 for six)
  • Eastemnent Relics cost three specific relics and 5568 shards each (33,408-61,596 for six, depending on luck).
  • True Relics cost four relics (any four) and 11,136 shards each (66,816 for six)

*spits drink out* *wipes off the computer screen*

Let’s ignore the already ridiculous costs we have ingame right now and the 5,568 shards for Eastemnet Relics (plus more if you weren’t lucky enough to decon the correct specific relics and need to meld those.)  But… 11,136 shards for ONE relic.  What are the devs smoking? Srsly!?  Apparently this number has been reduced from 14k.  I guess we’re supposed to be thankful?

I’m not sure if this information is still correct, but I found these numbers here concerning crafted relic shard returns:

  • T1 Crafted – 32 Relic Shards
  • T2 Crafted – 79
  • T3 Crafted – 464

I’ve never found deconning normal relics to yield me that many shards as I needed them for the melding anyway.  So my primary source for shards has been crafted relics.  I’m too lazy to do the math but it’s pretty obvious to see that it will take you a long time to get one True Relic.  Given characters need multiple LIs (some classes have it worse than others), these costs are outrageous.  Sure, this is beta and subject to change.  It would be really lovely if it was.

The thing is, the relic system was changed to supposedly make it easier to obtain relics.  It was supposed to be so easy that we wouldn’t even need to get them back on a max level decon.  It was so easy we could throw them away, get new ones and only buy the relic removal scroll in the store if we were feeling “lazy”.  Bah, the whole relic system has changed into a money grab from Turbine says my cynical self.

The only problem we had before the revamp was the randomness of it (and one could argue too many tiers).  It was down to luck if you got the right legacies on a weapon and got the relic you needed when combining.  I fully appreciate that Turbine has given us the control we’ve been asking for.  I don’t think they’ve implemented it correctly though.  Now we have:

  • too many tiers (back to 9 tiers again)
  • gold cost per meld is too steep (I spent nearly 50 gold  making relics for my RK’s LIs. It used to cost 100 silver to forge a t9 relic before the ravamp.. just saying)
  • shard requirement is outrageous
  • relic removal ability taken away from us and added into the store

I don’t like either how I remove a t6 legacy from a weapon and have it downgraded to a t2 but I can understand that they want us to put some work into the new weapon… though I could gripe about the whole throwing-away of a supposedly legendary weapon every 5 levels.

I can honestly say the LI grind is what has kept me from leveling many characters to level cap (well that and I find Stunland… I mean Dunland a bit boring).  I’m the type who likes to have well-geared characters, but when I think about all the work legacies and relics would take me, I just go “Meh….” and find something else to do.  Right now I cannot bring myself to grind out the compendiums on loads of characters to make loads of crafted relics, not to mention I should be doing all the guild crafting (I have every craft to max rank and reputation) so that they’re ready for the new crafting rep level.  But I just cannot be bothered.  It’s too much.

MoonwalkIntoMordor sums it up nicely:

Nobody can defend the current state of the system with a straight face. The best thing they can do is telling that “You don’t have to do it, so just ignore it and settle for tier 6″. Why should I ignore broken design? Why should I ignore the fact that they turned the system into an even worse resource sink compared to the old one, with the premise of fixing it? Telling that they want relics to be disposable, but making them so darned hard to obtain?

I am disappointed.

Nearly Headless Hobbit

That’s even worse than what my champ had. Poor guy.  (Not my hobbit, fyi, just someone I ran into and couldn’t help but notice the air between his head and body.)
